A clearer repair decision

Repair it.
Or replace it?

Start with a diagnosis and written options. Then separate the costs you know from the assumptions you’re making about the years ahead.

The decision starts with what failed.

A repairable fault is different from a system with multiple major problems. Ask the technician to explain the failure, show the findings, check applicable coverage, and describe what the proposed repair will and will not resolve.

Age helps provide context, but it does not diagnose a system. Avoid treating an age-times-repair-price rule as an automatic replacement recommendation.

Put the options on the same timeline.

Compare a time period you choose.

Enter your written quotes and assumptions. This worksheet compares entered costs; it does not predict equipment failure or recommend a diagnosis.

Fill in each field, including zero for an allowance you choose not to include.

Repair total = repair quote + annual cooling cost × years + additional repair allowance. Replacement total = replacement quote + annual cooling cost × years. Excludes financing, heating, maintenance differences, residual value, future replacement of the repaired system, and unplanned replacement-system repairs. If the old system would not last the full period, compare a shorter period or obtain a fuller ownership analysis.

Compare more than the arithmetic.

The repair

Does it address the root cause? What warranty covers the work? Are other issues known, or are future failures only a possibility?

The replacement

Does the quote include a matched system, needed installation changes, and written coverage? Will it address the comfort problem you actually have?

Your priorities

How long do you expect to stay? How disruptive would another outage be? How much do comfort, noise, and the timing of the expense matter to you?

Ask for a second explanation when needed.

If the diagnosis or recommendation is unclear, ask for it in writing or seek a second opinion. A useful explanation identifies the problem, the options, and the assumptions behind the recommendation. It should give you enough information to make a decision without pressure.
